Great Aussie car advertising of the 1960s

From Simca to Skoda, Ford to Fiat, Porsche to Prince, these classic car advertisements from the 1960s once graced the pages our favourite magazines.


If, like me, you lusted after cars as a young 'un, then you'll understand the allure of a well-designed advertisement.

Print advertisements might seem somewhat quaint in today's digital age, but in a time before the internet, and before even television was as commonplace as it is today, a beautifully designed ad in the pages of a magazine was a thing of beauty as well as a source of information.

As you can see from some of the examples we've highlighted here, car makers were often hell-bent in cramming as much information into their single page as possible, adverts as rich in detail as the headlines were in flights of fancy.



And headline writing was still an art from, copywriters weaving their magic with well-chosen words that elicit surprise and delight as well as luring readers with their promises of better lives.

"Monaro by Holden. Out to drive you wild."

Or, "Excitement machine... new Corolla 1100."



We're still waiting on that promise, Toyota.

This selection also highlights that Australia's new car scene has always been a vibrant and varied marketplace, with locally manufactured brands jostling for buyer's attention with imported oddities (Prince Gloria 6?).
