2022 MG ZS EV Excite: owner review
As car enthusiasts, we have been looking at getting into the EV market for some time.
Owner: Scott Walker
As car enthusiasts, we have been looking at getting into the EV market for some time.
We were not expecting much more than purely a cost-saving exercise. The extra initial costs of the EV vehicle to date didn't make financial sense in fuel savings against the petrol and diesel cousins. The MG ZS EV purely for us was the first EV that had the range, charging compatibility of fast chargers, and space we required for our family.
The build quality that we have experienced has been subsequently a pleasant surprise. We have felt that we have gotten more than value for money, and the MG currently presents as the best value EV on the market to date. We are eagerly waiting for the European versions of the MGs.
Our decision to buy the car was a spur of the moment economic decision. We travel 150km round trip/per day. We have a solar panel on the roof of our house, so it made sense to convert to an electric car. From the research we have done, the MG seemed to be the best value for money on the market at the moment.
The electric motor is very torquey, and the car is surprisingly efficient going over the estimated range as per the dashboard. It also has a number of surprising features including 360-degree cameras, auto headlights, and other features we are still yet to discover.
Personally, we have found this car to be super reliable. The practicability of the long trips is slightly reduced at the moment as we are still waiting on our fast charger.
Overall, we can't fault the economics and performance of this small family SUV. There are more performance-based EVs on the market, but for an entry-level family EV, we feel this car exceeds our expectations.
The cabin space is more usable than our previous Range Rover Evoque, and the build materials are comparable to, or even exceed, our previous 2020 C200.
The tech is a little bit behind the European cars. The backlighting on the LCD does not seem as clear, but the tech is up to date with all major brands. The app is easy to connect to our car and makes monitoring the levels of charge easier too.
Furthermore, having the battery pack lowers the centre of gravity and completely surpasses petrol and diesel companions for handling. Surprisingly, it carries its weight well and feels like a normal car to drive.
In regards to the price, its affordability is what attracted us to the MG ZS EV in the first place. It is a perfect entry-level EV at a competitive price to the major brands, petrol or electric.
To improve future models, we would love to see the 72kWh battery released in Australia. This would make the car that little bit more usable.
We are contemplating buying a second vehicle. We are excited about some of the MGs that have currently been released in Europe. We are eagerly waiting for them in Australia.
