Every electric car in Australia, ranked by range

How far can you drive in an electric car? There’s no easy answer – but we’ve attempted to simplify things by ranking every model available in Australia by claimed electric range.

If you’re wondering how long an electric car’s range should be, allow us to answer your question with one of our own – how much time do you have?

The driving range of electric cars – otherwise known as the maximum distance they can travel on a fully charged battery – is a tricky topic to navigate because it can vary greatly.

Influencing factors include the type of car, its average energy usage, the charging method used, the age of the battery, your individual driving style, and even the outside temperature.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question 'How much range is enough?', and the best way to tell if an electric car will meet your needs is to look at the manufacturer’s claimed range and consider your own weekly driving habits.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics's survey of motor vehicle use for 2019/20, the average Australian vehicle drives roughly 12,100km a year or 232km a week, meaning a range of 400km should be more than enough.

However, if you can’t charge at home, or plan to use your car more than usual, it might help to have a bit of padding.

To help you on your purchase journey, we’ve collated every single electric car currently available in Australia (as of June 2022) and ranked them based on their claimed electric range.

The figures we’ve used are according to the World harmonised Light vehicle Testing Procedure (WLTP) cycle – a testing method introduced in 2017 that uses real-world driving data to measure a car’s energy consumption and emissions.

We've focused on the combined claim, meaning the estimated range when measured over a mixture of urban and extra-urban driving.

Finally, we've ranked the cars based on their highest possible range, which may only be available in more expensive specification grades or with larger optional batteries.
